The nation's ski resorts are acting in concert to aggressively address the dangers of global warming. In 2000, the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) enacted Sustainable Slopes, a wide-ranging environmental charter. The charter was followed in 2002 by the adoption of a climate change policy that called for resorts to educate the public and guests about the impacts of global warming and to raise awareness amongst policy makers as to the dependence of winter sports on natural ecosystems. In 2003, NSAA launched a public outreach program: Keep Winter Cool.
 
While snowsports areas are not themselves a major source of global warming pollutants, the nation's ski resorts have led by example as advocates for the reduction of greenhouse gases and supporters of sound, science-based solutions to climate change. The NSAA participates in the Golden Eagle Awards for Environmental Excellence, which were established in 1993 and are administered by Clif Bar & Co. Golden Eagle and Silver Eagle awards are presented to resorts that show outstanding achievement in their environmental programs.
