Mammoth Mountain Ski Area's Department of Environmental Programs was established in 2000 to help ensure realization of the goal of sustainability - to be sustainable, MMSA must simultaneously fulfill environmental responsibilities, economic requirements, and social needs.

Awards & Accolades
Although only established in 2000, Mammoth's Environmental Programs department has already earned quite a few awards:
- Silver Eagle Award (2005)
For excellence in conserving energy and using cleaner, renewable energy - Silver Eagle Award (2003)
For Excellence in Waste Reduction and Recycling - Cal/EPA Pollution Prevention Award (2002)
Mammoth Mountain, in partnership with the Town of Mammoth Lakes, was recognized for a comprehensive recycling program that includes the collection of used motor fluids, used motorcycle tires, empty beverage containers, and cardboard at the local motocross track. - Keep California Beautiful Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award (2001)
The Mammoth CARES Recycling Program, a collaborative effort between the resort, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, and Mammoth Disposal, was recognized for the organization and implementation of a new recycling program and their private / public partnership.
Biodiesel Program
In the 2004/05 season MMSA began running its diesel fleet on B10 Biodiesel (a blend of 10% vegetable oil) to reduce air emissions and help develop alternative fuel markets.
